Wright Elementary School District offers formal music instruction for all students in grades 4-6. Classes are taught by a credentialed music teacher. All students learn basic music reading and writing skills, theory, music appreciation and history. They play rhythm instruments, recorders, and handchimes in ensembles as accompaniment or as instrumental solos. Students learn vocal technique by singing unison and two part songs. Students demonstrate performance skills through the opportunity to participate in music programs hosted twice a year at each of the district’s three schools. Music lessons are correlated to the grade level curriculum, and CA and national standards.
In addition to regular music classes, students in 5th and 6th grade may also elect to participate in band. Beginning and advanced bands are offered at each of the district’s three sites. Instruments offered include flute, clarinet, bass clarinet, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, trumpet , trombone, or percussion. Students learn both in sectionals and in a whole band setting. The bands are also featured at the schools’ concerts.
Music instruction is designed and developed to foster self esteem, to promote academic progress, and to unite students through the process of learning a universal language that all can use to communicate.
