Wright Elementary School District Independent Home Study (IHS)

  • Assembly Bill (AB) 130 - Independent Study (2021-22)

On July 9th, the California Legislature approved Assembly Bill (AB)130 which addresses an expanded independent study option for the 2021/2022 school year only.  Families should be aware that this option is not the same as the distance learning option offered during the last school year. We encourage parents to work with their student's school to determine the best educational option for their student.

    Independent Study Option (AB 130)

For the 2021-2022 school year, schools are required to offer an independent study option to be made available to students whose health would be put at risk by in-person instruction, as determined by their parent or guardian.

    Requesting a Parent-Teacher Conference

It is a parent’s right to request a parent-teacher conference prior to enrolling their student in Independent Study in order to inform their decision and ensure that it is appropriate for their student.  Parents who are interested in this option may request a parent-teacher conference and should contact their child’s teacher to set up an appointment and review the guidelines below.

    Enrolling, Disenrolling & Re-Enrolling

The Wright Elementary School District is offering Independent Home Study (IHS) for families who wish to have their children learn from home for the 2021-22 school year. Students who are enrolled in IHS are required to stay in the program for a minimum of fifteen (15) days. Upon submitting an IHS program application, the student will start in the IHS program within five (5) days.

Applications are available in English and Spanish and can be brought to the WESD District Office (4385 Price Ave) or emailed to Teresa Raef at

Should a parent/guardian wish to return their child to in-person learning; Upon exiting the IHS program, a student will be placed in a classroom within five (5) days. The District will make every attempt to return students to their previous school of enrollment, however, it is not guaranteed the student will be placed in the same class or school they previously attended. To disenroll from IHS and return to in-person learning, please notify Teresa Raef at or (707) 542-0550 ext. 263.

Daily Live and Synchronous Instruction for Independent Home Study

Independent Home Study provides instruction based on the state-adopted content standards by certificated teachers. There are specific requirements for instructional time that may include both synchronous and asynchronous work. These expectations will also be outlined in the students’ written Learning Agreement, which must be signed prior to enrollment in an independent study program.

“Live interaction” means interaction between the student and school staff, and may include peers.  Live interaction is provided for the purpose of maintaining school connectedness.  This interaction may take place in person or in the form of internet or telephonic communication.
“Synchronous instruction” means classroom-style instruction or designated small group or one-on-one instruction delivered in person, or in the form of internet or telephonic communications and involving live, two-way communication between the teacher and student.

Kindergarten to grade 2 - Daily synchronous instruction for all students throughout the school year - 60 minutes/day

Grades 3 to 6 - At least weekly synchronous instruction for all students throughout the school year - 60 minutes/week

Grades 7 to 8 - WESD is unable to offer IHS for 7th and 8th graders. If you are interested in enrolling your child in an Independent Study program, you will need to contact your district of residence which can be found by entering your address here
